In the southern coast of Baix Empordŕ we find the town of Begur. In this sector of Costa Brava (the littoral of Gerona) mountains dive into the Mediterranean sea, forming small coves and sandy beaches among rocky cliffs.
Pine forests go all the way to the shore, surrounding the town of Begur, which is only a few kilometers away from the sea. The historic quarter, a very traditional, colorful place, is dominated by the ruins of an austere castle built on rocks, which dates from the 15th century. It is still possible to admire the ancient walls, as well as five defense towers, erected between the 16th and 17th centuries. The area's popular architecture is characterized by the use of stone, and by great number Nabob’s houses, stately homes in colonial taste. The ancient fishing quarters, by the beach, have become important residential and tourist areas. These include Aiguablava, where we have an excellent Parador de Turismo and a small marina, and Sa Tuna beach, between the sea and the mountain. |
